Emma C. Berry

Emma C. Berry is a Noank, CT fishing smack built in 1866. She is still afloat and in the collection at Mystic Seaport.

I originally started the model in 2004. I got the frames installed on the keel, but realized I didn't really know how to plank a hull, so I set the model aside until I could learn how to do that. The model sat on the shelf for 10 years. Around the Christmas holidays of 2014, I decided to take up modeling again. I'd taken a 6-year break from the hobby and needed something relatively simple to re-develop my skills.

I discovered pretty quickly that the hull had some problems but rather than starting from scratch, I decided to plow forward and work around the issues. I also discovered that my skill level had declined from where it was 6 years before, so Emma C. became almost like a beginners model. As a result, it's not as well finished as I'd prefer, but it did help to get me re-started in the hobby. I finished the model in April, 2015 and moved on to a scratch build of the scow schooner Alma.
